On the occasion of World Art Day, a group of artists facing auditory challenges share their journey of self-discovery and empowerment through art. These individuals, studying at Dr Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU), have transformed their struggles into vibrant expressions of identity and purpose. Through mediums such as painting, sculpture, and visual arts, they not only communicate their inner worlds but also challenge societal perceptions about disability. Their stories highlight how creativity serves as both a therapeutic outlet and a tool for advocacy, breaking barriers and fostering understanding.
Arpit Chaurasiya, a 26-year-old pursuing his master’s degree in visual arts, recounts how art became his voice amidst discrimination. Born with hearing difficulties, he faced ridicule during his formative years. Yet, it was through colors, lines, and shapes that he found liberation. "Art has redefined me," he explains via text, emphasizing its role in instilling confidence and freedom. For him, every stroke on canvas symbolizes resilience and passion, enabling others to see beyond physical limitations.
Similarly, Mayank Vaish, a first-year MVA student aged 23, uses art to bridge communication gaps. His father, RK Vaish, recalls how art helped Mayank overcome childhood struggles related to interaction. Now, Mayank employs vivid hues to critique social injustices, transforming personal challenges into broader messages of awareness. This transformation exemplifies the power of artistic expression in reshaping one's narrative.
Abhinav Shakya, another passionate artist, shares his joy in using color as a medium for free expression. He attributes much of his success to supportive mentors and family members who encouraged his talents. By sensitizing communities about issues affecting those with hearing impairments, Shakya underscores the importance of empathy in promoting inclusivity.
Ramu Sharma, a fourth-year BVA student, describes art as an unrestricted space where ideas flow freely. At 22, he channels observations from life into compelling sculptures and paintings, asserting independence through creative pursuits. To Ramu, art transcends boundaries, offering limitless possibilities for authentic communication.
The collective journeys of these artists underscore the transformative potential of art. Beyond being a mere hobby or career path, it acts as a lifeline connecting them to themselves and society. Through dedication and creativity, they inspire countless others by proving that true expression knows no limits.
