Traveling along Fair Street in Carmel has become quite a task due to the ongoing construction projects. These efforts are set to transform the narrow and winding road into a safe access and egress to the county seat.

Project Overview

The $30 million road improvement project is not only enhancing safety but also improving traffic flow and infrastructure from Simpson Road to Route 52. Sidewalks are being added along with streetlights, and drainage is being upgraded. An additional lane is being created for easier turning into and out of the Carmel High School parking lot. Construction began in September after years of delays and is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

Despite the current inconveniences and traffic delays, Carmel High School Principal Brian Piazza emphasized that the construction will ultimately make the road safer. "The traffic challenges will be a thing of the past. Upon completion, the sidewalks and additional turning lane will greatly benefit our school and community, especially in terms of student safety."

Carmel Central School District's supervisor of Transportation, Michael Klenotiz, agreed. "This project will go a long way toward keeping school bus traffic on schedule."

Widening and Underground Utilities

In addition to widening Fair Street, utility crews are laying lines underground from Vink Drive to Route 52. A retention pond has already been built on the property behind Winwater Supply, along with a road for its maintenance.

The retention pond, not visible from the road, is an important part of the project. It helps manage water flow and ensures the stability of the area.

The underground utility work is crucial for the long-term functionality of the road and the surrounding infrastructure.

Construction Safety Measures

Putnam County DPW Commissioner Thomas Feighery urged drivers to be cautious while navigating the active construction zone. There will be steel plates in some areas that could pose a hazard.

Drivers need to be aware of these potential risks and follow the detour signs observed in the hamlet. Fair Street remains open, but motorists should take extra care.

The construction crew is working diligently to ensure the safety of both workers and drivers during the project.
