2025-04-24

The Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce organized a Business Expo at the Waynesboro Area Senior High School, showcasing local businesses and fostering community connections. Meanwhile, the upcoming Healthy Kids Day at the Waynesboro Area YMCA promises an engaging event filled with activities and giveaways, including a children's book inspired by a real-life squirrel.

This event aims to promote a healthy and fun summer season for families, offering insights into various programs such as summer camps, swim lessons, water safety, and sports teams. Community organizations will also participate, providing information and interactive experiences for attendees.

A Squirrel’s Tale Inspires Local Literature

During renovations at the YMCA, a curious squirrel named Sylvester became the centerpiece of a charming children's story written by Nancy Funk. This tale, sponsored by the Waynesboro Owls Club, will be distributed during the Healthy Kids Day event. The book recounts Sylvester's adventures within the YMCA building, weaving an imaginative narrative around real-life events.

Inspired by actual sightings of a squirrel inside the YMCA, local author Nancy Funk crafted a delightful tale featuring Sylvester, a squirrel who embarks on a whimsical journey through the facility in search of donuts. The story mirrors the playful antics of the real-life squirrel that once roamed the premises, adding a touch of fantasy to its escapades. Through vibrant illustrations by Janie Moltrup, the book captures the essence of adventure and curiosity, resonating with young readers. This creative endeavor not only entertains but also highlights the importance of imagination and exploration in early childhood development.

Healthy Kids Day: Fun and Learning Combined

Set to take place on April 26, Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA invites families to partake in a range of educational and entertaining activities designed to kick off a safe and enjoyable summer season. Participants can expect to learn about various programs offered by the YMCA, engage in games, sports, and swimming, and receive complimentary copies of "Sylvester's Adventures at the YMCA."

Healthy Kids Day serves as an ideal platform for families to explore numerous opportunities available throughout the summer. Attendees will have access to detailed information regarding summer camps, swim lessons, water safety initiatives, and sports teams like the Strokes, Spokes, and Strides. Community partners, including the Antietam Humane Society, Buttonwood Nature Center, and Cumberland Valley School of Music, will contribute to the festivities by offering hands-on activities and demonstrations. Highlights include water safety sessions, dancing, crafts, coloring, temporary tattoos, games, a bounce house, obstacle courses, and balloon animals. Additionally, both the large and small pools will be open for swimming from noon to 1 p.m., requiring adult supervision for children under 12 years old and non-swimmers. This comprehensive event ensures a memorable experience while promoting health, education, and community involvement.
