This weekend, drivers in San Antonio’s Northeast Side will face significant changes due to construction activities. As part of the I-35 NEX project, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has scheduled several closures that will affect travel routes around Live Oak, Retama Park, and Universal City. The work includes closing southbound ramps and mainlanes of I-35 leading to Loop 1604 and Pat Booker Road. These closures are necessary for drainage, barrier installation, and striping improvements. Drivers should anticipate delays and consider alternative routes. The construction is expected to last from Friday evening until early Monday morning.
Beginning Friday at 9 p.m., TxDOT will initiate a series of closures impacting traffic on I-35. The southbound collector ramp connecting to Loop 1604 mainlanes will be closed, as well as the exit to Pat Booker Road. Additionally, two southbound mainlanes of I-35 between Retama Parkway and Loop 1604 will be shut down. This work aims to enhance infrastructure by improving drainage systems, installing barriers, and repainting road markings. The construction activities will continue until 5 a.m. on Monday, January 13th. Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly.
To mitigate disruptions, TxDOT has provided detour options for travelers. For those heading westbound on Loop 1604 from southbound I-35, an alternate route involves exiting at Retama Parkway and proceeding along the southbound frontage road through Forum Parkway. Continuing on this frontage road, drivers can then access the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road via Lookout Road. Another detour for eastbound Loop 1604 or Pat Booker Road involves exiting at Judson Road, turning left onto the northbound frontage road, and following signs to Toepperwein Road. From there, travelers can reach Pat Booker Road and eventually Loop 1604.
The success of these construction efforts relies heavily on weather conditions, which may cause schedule adjustments. Drivers should stay informed about potential changes and remain flexible with their travel plans. By adhering to the recommended detours and staying alert to road signs, motorists can navigate the affected areas more smoothly during this critical phase of infrastructure improvement.
