An exciting cultural event is set to unfold as the Owensboro Art Guild prepares for its first-ever Bluegrass Music Art Exhibition next month. Coinciding with the renowned ROMP Festival, this exhibition will pay homage to Kentucky's rich bluegrass heritage through the creative lens of regional artists. The display will take place from June 23 to July 5 at the Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Owensboro/Waterfront. Jamie Kniffen, Vice President of the Owensboro Art Guild, shared that the idea had been brewing for a couple of years, inspired by the WC Handy Blues Festival in Henderson, which features an annual juried art show centered on blues music. This sparked the notion to create something similar but focused on bluegrass.
Artists within the Guild have been given free rein to explore and express the essence of bluegrass music through diverse mediums such as paintings, photographs, sculptures, and collages. According to Kniffen, the theme serves as a springboard for creativity, leaving it largely up to each artist to decide how they wish to interpret it. With a membership of 63 active participants, the Guild anticipates a broad spectrum of entries, though many are likely to be submitted just before the deadline—a common trait among artists. Despite this tendency, the Guild remains optimistic about receiving contributions from a significant portion of its members. The venue, located at 401 W. 2nd Street, will welcome numerous visitors due to concurrent summer activities like ROMP, The Great Race, and Friday After 5.
This exhibition marks the beginning of what the Guild envisions as a burgeoning tradition. Success in this inaugural event could pave the way for future iterations that extend beyond the Guild's current membership. Expanding the reach to include external artists and transitioning into a juried format could enhance participation and elevate the event's prestige. Some of the featured pieces will be available for acquisition, subject to individual artist preferences. This initiative not only showcases local talent but also fosters a deeper appreciation for bluegrass culture, encouraging community engagement and artistic exploration. Through these efforts, the Guild aims to strengthen cultural ties and inspire greater involvement in the arts.
