Global Enthusiasm for Hosting Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Beyond
2025-04-16

An impressive seven nations have showcased their eagerness to host future editions of the Commonwealth Games, according to an announcement by Commonwealth Sport. Among these, five are eyeing the centenary edition in 2030, while two others are considering hosting beyond this milestone year. This interest spans continents including Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, suggesting that Glasgow's upcoming 2026 event may mark a long hiatus before another UK hosting opportunity arises. The enthusiasm from these countries injects new vitality into the movement, especially following Victoria, Australia's withdrawal as hosts for next year’s games.

Among the interested parties, Canada, India, and Nigeria are among those targeting the 2030 Games, whereas New Zealand is focused on the 2034 edition. Specific details regarding the other prospective bidder remain undisclosed. Each bid represents a single country rather than a collaborative effort between multiple nations. As discussions unfold between bid delegations and Commonwealth Sport, decisions will emerge concerning whether various cities within one nation might share hosting responsibilities.

Core sports such as athletics and swimming must feature prominently in all programs. However, future organizers will enjoy increased flexibility, with an ideal sport count hovering around fifteen. Hosts will also be encouraged to leverage existing infrastructure to minimize expenses. Moreover, there remains a steadfast dedication to ensuring equal opportunities for both para and non-para athletes across all future events.

Bidders for the 2030 Games will need to present comprehensive hosting plans, leading to an evaluation phase conducted by Commonwealth Sport. Subsequently, the executive board will propose a preferred host, subject to final approval by the general assembly during its November meeting in Glasgow. Katie Sadleir, chief executive of Commonwealth Sport, expressed delight at the overwhelming interest demonstrated and applauded Glasgow for setting a trailblazing example with its compact yet innovative approach to hosting.

Glasgow’s 2026 event will encompass ten sports held at four venues, all located within an eight-mile radius. This strategic layout exemplifies efficiency and innovation, paving the way for future hosts to adopt similar approaches in delivering memorable sporting experiences while optimizing resources and minimizing costs.
