Google Updates Pixel Phones for Easy Temperature Checking
2024-12-03
In the past, we've emphasized the significance of temperature for our phones. But checking it often posed challenges, especially on Pixel phones which typically required third-party apps. Now, a recent update to the Pixel troubleshooting app has made it effortless to monitor the live device temperature and know when the phone is getting too hot.

Easily Check Pixel Phone's Temperature with Google's Update

How the Update Works

9to5 Google initially noticed the change after the update. Android Authority claimed they had to sideload the app to find this feature. Once downloaded, it can be accessed by going to Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm. Another way is to search “Device temperature” in the settings app. This feature offers real-time updates with four color-coded labels: cold, normal, warm, and elevated. As seen in the image (credit: 9to5 Google), the phone also provides several messages based on the device's heat level. Google states that the “device temperature is estimated based on multiple internal sensors” and offers suggestions on how to warm up or cool down the Pixel phone.

The danger of extreme temperatures to phones is often overlooked but can cause significant damage. For example, older Samsung models suffered from a green line after a recent update. There are several things you can do to keep your phone cool, and we have a comprehensive breakdown of the best ways to prevent overheating, which can be very helpful.

Availability of the Update

9to5 Google has confirmed that the troubleshooting app update is available on Pixel 6 and later models. However, it does not seem to be a feature on the Pixel tablet. The update has also been noticed on the Pixel Fold, Pixel 8a, and the Pixel 9 Pro running Android 15.
