Inclusive Sled Hockey: A Gateway to Confidence and Community
2025-04-21

At Polar Ice Raleigh, every Saturday morning transforms into a celebration of inclusivity as athletes with diverse abilities gather for Hurricanes Sled Hockey practice. This nonprofit organization offers individuals living with physical disabilities or mental impairments the opportunity to experience ice hockey in a supportive environment. Founded over two decades ago, it provides both children and adults with the chance to engage in their beloved sport while fostering confidence, independence, and a strong sense of community.

Kayden Beasley exemplifies the impact of this program. Born without legs due to congenital bilateral above-the-knee amputation, Kayden joined sled hockey at the age of eleven after being adopted by Anthony and Amy Beasley. His journey has been remarkable; he was recently named to Team USA's Paralympic sled hockey team. For Kayden, sled hockey is more than just a sport—it's a testament to resilience and determination. Inspired by his older brother Caleb, who also joined the team, the siblings now share an unbreakable bond on and off the ice.

The roots of Hurricanes Sled Hockey trace back to 2006 when Brian Jacoby’s son Tyler fell in love with hockey during a Carolina Hurricanes playoff game. Despite having spina bifida, Tyler took to the ice less than a year later, sparking the creation of this groundbreaking initiative. Today, the organization thrives thanks to partnerships with entities like the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation, which has contributed over $75,000 to support equipment, ice time, and player development.

Beyond financial backing, the program relies heavily on volunteers such as Cody Loyer, whose admiration for the athletes fuels his dedication as a coach. While significant progress has been made, the program seeks greater awareness and participation, particularly among adult players. Notably, able-bodied individuals are encouraged to join, underscoring the inclusive ethos that defines Hurricanes Sled Hockey.

What began as one boy's dream has evolved into a movement empowering countless lives. Through teamwork, innovation, and unwavering support, Hurricanes Sled Hockey continues to redefine accessibility in sports. The camaraderie experienced by players like Kayden and Caleb serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when barriers are removed and potential is embraced.

As the program grows, so does its mission—to ensure future generations have access to the joy and empowerment sled hockey provides. By welcoming new participants and raising visibility, Hurricanes Sled Hockey remains committed to building a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow for all aspiring athletes.
