Innovative Nutrition Program Empowers Student-Athletes in Birmingham
2025-03-27

A groundbreaking initiative has been transforming the lives of student-athletes in Birmingham City Schools. Spearheaded by sports medicine experts at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Bama Wellness Advocacy, this program places a strong emphasis on holistic wellness, including nutrition, mental health, and adequate rest. Initially targeting basketball programs at Ramsey High School and Huffman High School, the project has since broadened its scope to encompass multiple football and basketball teams, as well as various spring sports.

Under the leadership of James Jones, head athletic trainer for UAB's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Birmingham City Schools, and Jacquie Fazekas, founder of Bama Wellness Advocacy, the program has taken innovative steps at Wenonah High School. Here, it includes a Peer Health and Wellness Club that collaborates with the school’s culinary arts curriculum. This club educates not only athletes but also their peers, coaches, and parents about the importance of proper nutrition. Furthermore, partnerships with local caterers and community leaders like Birmingham City Councilor Clinton Woods have enabled the provision of nutritional guidance, snacks, pre-game meals, and game day breakfasts across all sports at Huffman High School.

This collaborative effort underscores the potential of young athletes to inspire healthier lifestyles within their communities. As Fazekas notes, expanding peer wellness groups in each school fosters dialogue around nutritious eating habits and positive behaviors. With access to expert dietary counseling from UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine, participants gain insights into optimizing performance through tailored nutrition strategies. According to Jones, these students are catalysts driving change beyond sports fields, influencing family members and neighbors alike. The ultimate vision is to extend this impactful program to every student-athlete across Birmingham City Schools, fueled by ongoing partnerships and support networks.
