Mahlkönig Unveils X64 SD Grinder: A New Era for Home Coffee Enthusiasts
2025-06-30

Mahlkönig, a renowned German manufacturer of commercial coffee grinders, has expanded its domestic product line with the introduction of the X64 SD. This innovative machine marks the company's second venture into the home-use market, following the successful launch of the X54 Allround five years prior. Unveiled at recent brand events and officially introduced at the World of Coffee Jakarta trade show in May, the X64 SD is a compact, single-dose grinder engineered for comprehensive functionality, capable of producing grinds suitable for everything from fine espresso to coarse cold brew.

The X64 SD distinguishes itself with a redesigned form factor, departing from the cylindrical aesthetic of its predecessor, the X54, which mirrored Mahlkönig's professional E-series. This new, angular design directly supports the grinder's core innovation: a tilted orientation of its 64-millimeter flat burrs, crafted to minimize coffee retention. The machine's adjustment mechanism features a dial with numbered settings from one to twelve, yet a complete rotation is necessary to advance the indicator by a single increment. This deliberate design choice provides a broad and finely tuned stepless adjustment range, allowing users precise control over their grind size. Additionally, the X64 SD boasts a built-in capacity of 34 grams of whole bean coffee without its external hopper, which adds an extra 105 grams of capacity. Powering the grinder are custom-designed Mahlkönig burrs, rotating at an impressive 1,950 RPM, enabling a rapid grinding speed of up to 3 grams per second. An included bellows system ensures that nearly all residual grounds are expelled into the 58-millimeter dosing cup receptacle, which can be further enhanced with an optional anti-static funnel.

The X64 SD is competitively priced at $599 in the United States. Initial units are currently in transit to warehouses in Hamburg, Germany, and Seattle, Washington, with simultaneous shipping scheduled to commence next month across the U.S., EU, and Asia. In parallel with this launch, Mahlkönig is also advancing its Grind-By-Sync system, introducing the Sync Scale. This interactive scale is designed to integrate with a broader spectrum of commercial espresso machines, linking them to Grind-By-Sync grinders for precise extraction weighing. The Sync Scale will also be compatible with the Mahlkönig E64 WS, a home-market Grind-By-Sync grinder set to debut this fall, alongside Mahlkönig's inaugural home espresso machine. These developments coincide with the company’s recent promotion of its flagship commercial models, the EK Omnia series.

Demand for the X64 SD has surpassed initial expectations, prompting Mahlkönig to accelerate production. Frederik Bertges, Mahlkönig’s home sales lead, emphasized the United States' importance as a key market, ensuring it receives priority in volume allocation. Despite this, current back orders suggest that production capacity will remain a challenge throughout the year. The company is committed to fairly distributing monthly inventory to its partners globally, aiming to provide as many customers as possible with access to the new grinder this year.
