What began as a contentious idea for Montes, a distinguished Chilean winemaking establishment, has blossomed into an emblem of excellence. In 1998, when the Chilean wine landscape was considerably more conservative, the proposition of a premium Syrah project was viewed by many as an act of pure audacity. However, rather than succumbing to doubt, the creators of Montes Folly embraced this perception, proudly etching the narrative of their 'mad venture' onto every bottle, following its resounding success.
The decision to cultivate Syrah was Montes Folly's initial act of rebellion. While esteemed in its European origins, Syrah was virtually nonexistent in Chile prior to the 1990s. The prevalent Chilean fine wine scene was predominantly shaped by Cabernet Sauvignon. Thus, the selection of a specific plot by co-founder Aurelio Montes for an unblended Syrah represented a profound departure from the norm. This audacious move, initially doubted, ultimately showcased the distinct character of the varietal from its unique terroir.
Montes already boasted an established icon wine, Montes Alpha M, a conventional blend of Bordeaux varietals that resonated with the prevailing understanding of Chilean wine strengths. Introducing another high-caliber wine, especially a Syrah, was seen as a potential diversion. Yet, Montes persisted, and Montes Folly now stands proudly alongside the winery's most revered creations within 'The Divine Collection.' The initial skepticism surrounding the expansion of their icon wine portfolio has long since dissipated, replaced by widespread acclaim.
The unconventional spirit of Montes Folly extended to its very source – the vineyard itself. Aurelio Montes' discovery of the ideal Syrah site within the Apalta Estate, renowned for its challenging terrain, underscored a commitment to potential over ease. Situated on the steepest gradients of Colchagua Valley, with some slopes reaching a 45-degree incline, the vineyard demands immense manual effort for cultivation and harvesting. This arduous labor, coupled with poor, granitic soils and limited water, results in naturally low yields, but paradoxically, imbues the grapes with exceptional concentration, color, and flavor, producing a crop of unparalleled quality.
The meticulous vinification process of Montes Folly is designed to amplify the grapes' inherent concentration. Following stringent selection at both the vineyard and winery, the must undergoes cool maceration for precise tannin extraction. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak, with 70% new barrels. This intensive winemaking approach, though demanding, is deemed essential for such a distinctive cuvée, ensuring that every facet of its unique character is preserved and enhanced, leaving no room for compromise.
Montes' enduring commitment to Folly is further exemplified by its distinctive label, designed by the renowned Welsh illustrator Ralph Steadman. Known for his expressive, ink-splotched art, Steadman's collaboration was born from an unconventional journey through Chile's Atacama desert. His inspired depictions of the alien-like landscape, initially used until the 2005 vintage, continue to grace the bottles, challenging the 'tyranny of Bordeaux' in label design. Steadman's interpretation of the winery's angelic symbol—depicting her as playfully tipsy and flirty—serves as a perfect metaphor for the wine itself: heavenly, yet undeniably touched by a stroke of delightful madness.
The Montes Folly 2021, having secured a Master medal at the Global Syrah Masters 2025, stands as a testament to its exceptional quality. Crafted from 100% Syrah grapes grown in the Colchagua region of Chile, this high-end expression boasts an alcohol by volume of 15%. Priced at approximately £57, it reveals intense notes of blackcurrant and dark cherry, complemented by nuances of peppercorns and a subtle olive hint. Its finish is persistently tannic, rounding off with rich dark chocolate and plum flavors, marking it as a truly distinguished and classic red wine.
