In the town of Mulberry, just south of Lakeland, a vibrant new food hall has emerged, offering an array of culinary delights. Known as Depot 303, this establishment features various food vendors and a bar serving handcrafted cocktails and beer. Operated by Jon Bucklew, one of the founders of The Joinery in downtown Lakeland, Depot 303 held its soft opening in early April and is now open for regular hours. With an eclectic mix of cuisines and a spacious, minimalist design, this venue aims to attract visitors from both Mulberry and the surrounding areas.
The concept behind Depot 303 was sparked when the city of Mulberry acquired the building in 2022. Contracted by the city to manage the food hall, Bucklew carefully selected a diverse group of vendors to bring life to the small town historically recognized for phosphate mining. Among the current offerings are Tilaw Asian Fusion, Fat Maggie’s, Ling’s Dumplings, and Pizza Odyssey. Each vendor brings unique flavors and cultural influences, such as Filipino-inspired dishes, American classics, Asian dumplings, and artisan pizzas. Additionally, two more vendors, King of the Coop and Bottega Porchetta, are set to join the lineup later in May.
Bucklew’s vision extends beyond just food; the interior design reflects his artistic flair, with custom-made furniture crafted by his own company, Seventeen20. The space boasts a screened-in patio capable of accommodating approximately 280 guests and offers facilities for private events. This inviting atmosphere, combined with convenient free parking, makes Depot 303 an appealing destination for gatherings and socializing.
Connections between Bucklew and some of the food stall proprietors run deep. Dusin Olson, owner of Fat Maggie’s, previously worked part-time as a bartender at The Joinery while running his catering business. Although he declined an earlier opportunity to operate a dessert-based stall at The Joinery, he eagerly accepted the chance to bring Fat Maggie’s to Depot 303. Similarly, Jun Dobrea, co-owner and chef at Tilaw Asian Fusion, was part of the team that launched Sabu Ramen at The Joinery. His journey through the pandemic led him to create Pinoy Cravings, which eventually became part of Catapult. These personal and professional ties enhance the collaborative spirit at Depot 303.
Depot 303 not only enriches the local dining scene but also fosters community engagement. By blending varied cuisines with a welcoming ambiance, it encourages residents and visitors alike to explore new flavors and experiences. As additional vendors join and private events take place, Depot 303 is poised to become a cornerstone of Mulberry’s social landscape, bridging connections between neighboring towns and fostering a sense of unity through shared enjoyment of good food.
