Road construction season in northwestern Pennsylvania has officially come to an end. While the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is currently focused on clearing roads of snow and ice, it's time to take a moment and reflect on the construction projects that took place in the Erie region this year. These projects showcase PennDOT's unwavering commitment to an overall transportation system that prioritizes safety and accessibility for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

2024 Construction in Erie Region

PennDOT has been busy in the Erie region this year. They paved 66 miles of roads, seal-coated over 400 miles of roads, and repaired or replaced 25 bridges in Erie, Crawford, Forest, Mercer, Venango, and Warren counties. In Erie County alone, several significant projects are underway.

The Central Bayfront Parkway project is making progress at the intersections with Sassafras Street Extension, State Street, and Holland Street. This work will continue through 2027 and has a cost of $112 million. The East Bayfront Parkway project is also seeing safety improvements from Port Access Road to East 12th Street, with the original $4.5 million project expanded to include East Sixth Street improvements.

The Cranberry Street safety project includes adding a traffic signal at the intersection of Cranberry Street and the Bayfront Parkway, along with pedestrian improvements. It costs $571,000. The Route 20 bridge replacement over Twenty Mile Creek in North East Township is another major project. The old bridge was removed this year, and the new bridge will be built in 2025, with a cost of $9.6 million.

The Waterford Covered Bridge in Waterford Township is undergoing repair and rehabilitation. This locally-owned bridge carries Niemeyer Road over LeBeouf Creek and has a cost of $3.5 million. Depot Road in Harborcreek Township is also getting attention, with paving and safety improvements scheduled to be completed in 2025 at a cost of $13.5 million. Additionally, Route 19 in Summit Township is being paved for more than a mile, with a cost of $2.6 million.

2024 Construction in Crawford County

In Crawford County, work included rebuilding five miles of Route 6 in Meadville and West Mead Township. The $16.6 million project continues in 2025 and includes intersection improvements and the creation of a multi-use trail. Construction also saw an $8.9 million project to repave five miles of Interstate 79 in Greenwood and Union townships.

Scheduled for 2025

Several construction projects from this year will continue in 2025. These include work on the Bayfront Parkway's central corridor, the Route 20 bridge replacement in North East, and Depot Road work in Harborcreek. Sixty-one new contracts have so far been awarded for 2025, including 21 road projects, the repair or replacement of 21 bridges, nine safety projects, and 10 projects for locally owned roads, bridges, and trails. Five additional contracts for approximately $9.5 million worth of work are expected to be awarded by the end of this year.

Major construction in 2025 will include the replacement of the Jordan Road bridge over Interstate 90 in Harborcreek, the replacement of the Old Route 99 bridge over Lamson Run in McKean Township, and repairs to the East Main Street bridge over Twenty Mile Creek in North East Township. Multimodal construction will involve installing sidewalk along the south side of Route 6N in Edinboro, from Ontario Street to the Scotland Road entrance to PennWest University. This project will also include the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over Darrows Creek.
