2025-05-02

A prominent figure in the performing arts community has been chosen once again to guide the Equity union through the next half-decade. With an overwhelming majority of 81%, Paul W Fleming secured his position over competitor Riky Ash, who garnered 19% of the votes. This re-election underscores a commitment by members to pursue a robust and forward-thinking organization that champions their rights within the industry.

As the leader looks ahead, he outlined key areas where the union will focus its efforts. Addressing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, fostering respectful workplaces, ensuring fair compensation, safeguarding venues, and adapting to contemporary work norms are among the top priorities. Fleming emphasized that these initiatives align with broader goals set by the council and conference, drawing inspiration from branch and committee insights to address critical concerns affecting workers across all sectors.

Since taking office in 2020, Fleming's tenure has seen significant growth, with Equity reaching its largest membership ever at 50,000 individuals. His proven negotiation skills, honed through extensive experience in West End dealings and major theatre agreements, have laid a solid foundation for this progress. The future holds promise as the union continues to evolve, addressing both current and future challenges while advocating for fairness and innovation in the performing arts world.
