Rowan Coffee Expands with a Vibrant New Cafe in Asheville
2025-05-14

A new chapter unfolds for Rowan Coffee as the esteemed roasting company based in Asheville, North Carolina, inaugurates its second location. This stylish and inviting cafe not only serves as a hub for coffee enthusiasts but also houses the company's roasting operations. Set within a former automotive garage in West Asheville, the establishment boasts expansive vintage industrial windows that bathe the interior in natural light. The design aesthetic cleverly integrates elements from oyster bars, European bistros, and 1950s diners, creating a unique atmosphere that resonates with both locals and visitors alike.

The transformation of the former automotive garage into a vibrant coffee haven was driven by a vision shared by Jessi Lee Cord and Bow Smith, co-founders of Rowan Coffee. Cord's passion for architecture inspired her to incorporate handmade green tiles in a crosshatch pattern at the service counter, complemented by white subway tiles on an exterior kitchen wall. Smith elaborated on their design philosophy, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an airy ambiance enriched by walnut wood and brass accents, echoing the elegance of their original downtown Asheville location yet offering a contrasting vibe.

Inside this spacious facility, which spans 2,760 square feet, a dedicated area of 960 square feet is allocated for roasting operations. Here, Smith utilizes a state-of-the-art 15-kilo Mill City Roasters machine, supported by seasoned baristas Evan Cannon and Jack Zlotea, who contribute to production roasting. The company collaborates with importers such as Semilla, Osito, Red Fox Coffee Merchants, and The Coffee Quest to source high-quality green coffees, prioritizing washed varieties while incorporating a select few natural-process options. These coffees are meticulously roasted to highlight clarity and balance, ensuring each cup delivers a harmonious blend of sweetness and acidity.

Beyond coffee, the venue offers a culinary experience blending Scandinavian influences with Southern American flavors, featuring sweet and savory waffles alongside other light bites. In the evenings, patrons can indulge in low-intervention and natural wines, enhancing the overall appeal of the establishment. Smith's journey in the coffee industry began as a barista at Black Tap Coffee in Charleston, South Carolina, leading him to Hex Coffee in Charlotte before founding Rowan Coffee in 2020. With the opening of this second shop, equipped with an expanded kitchen, Rowan Coffee aims to refine its operations and build sustainable careers for its growing team.

As Rowan Coffee celebrates the opening of its new cafe at 785 Haywood Road in Asheville, it marks a significant milestone in its evolution. The company remains committed to enhancing the quality and consistency of its offerings while fostering meaningful relationships with coffee producers worldwide. This endeavor underscores Rowan Coffee's dedication to crafting exceptional experiences for its customers, setting a benchmark for excellence in the coffee industry.
