In the heart of Oconto, the joy of tennis has been revived after a significant break. Residents are thrilled about the return of tennis facilities at Sharp Park, providing local players with an opportunity to enjoy their favorite sport without traveling far. The city's Parks and Recreation department, now led by Jeremy Wusterbarth, has received positive feedback from community members who can once again engage in matches close to home.
For years, tennis enthusiasts in Oconto had to journey to neighboring towns such as Oconto Falls or Marinette due to the absence of local courts. This situation arose when previous courts at the Bond Center were removed to make way for the construction of Bellin Health Oconto Hospital back in 2005. Consequently, residents faced inconvenience until recently when new courts were established at Sharp Park on Seventh Street.
The initiative was made possible through a generous grant from the Bond Foundation, which facilitated the paving of the courts and installation of necessary fencing. Interestingly, the nets currently in use were salvaged from the old Bond Center courts. These nets were donated to the Parks and Recreation department, requiring only minor investments in new sleeves and posts to ensure functionality.
Jeremy Wusterbarth expressed that the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Many residents have shown immense enthusiasm, appreciating the convenience of having tennis facilities within the city limits. This development not only promotes physical activity but also fosters social interaction among locals.
With everything set up and operational, Oconto’s tennis community eagerly anticipates enjoying numerous matches at the newly refurbished courts. The project exemplifies how strategic partnerships and community support can bring cherished amenities back to life, enriching the lives of all who participate.
