The University of North Dakota (UND) men’s tennis team has reached a significant milestone this season by securing their place in the Summit League championship match. After defeating Omaha 4-1 in the semifinals at Denver Tennis Park, the Fighting Hawks are now set to face off against regular-season champions Denver on Saturday morning. This marks the first time that UND's men’s tennis program has made it to the conference final as a Division-I entity, adding another remarkable achievement to their already impressive record.
In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, UND showcased their prowess during Friday's semifinal encounter. The doubles matches set the tone early for the Fighting Hawks, with Ethan Terry and Andrew Hayduke II clinching a decisive victory over Omaha’s duo at No. 2 doubles. Furthermore, Leo Galliano and Jerall Yasin sealed the doubles point by defeating their counterparts at No. 3 doubles. Despite Andrew Hayduke II withdrawing from the singles lineup, Christos Alex stepped up admirably, delivering an emphatic win at No. 6 singles. Additionally, Galliano and Ange-Kevin Koua contributed crucial victories in their respective singles matches, ensuring a convincing overall triumph.
As the Fighting Hawks prepare to meet Denver, they reflect on their previous encounter where the Pioneers emerged victorious without dropping a single game. However, the UND squad remains undeterred and focused on avenging that loss. With a stellar season record of 18-4, which includes setting a new program benchmark for wins in a single campaign, the Fighting Hawks aim to etch their names into history once more.
Beyond just men’s tennis, UND has demonstrated strong athletic performances across various sports this year. Notably, both the men’s basketball and women’s tennis teams have previously competed for Summit League titles. While the women's tennis team fell short against Denver in the semifinals, finishing with a commendable 14-8 record, the men carry forward the hopes and aspirations of the entire university community.
Looking ahead, the stage is set for an exhilarating showdown between UND and Denver. As Ange-Kevin Koua symbolically placed UND’s name card into the championship slot following their semifinal success, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an unforgettable contest. Whether or not they secure the ultimate prize, the Fighting Hawks have already cemented their legacy through their relentless determination and outstanding achievements this season.
