Forsyth Farmers Market Introduces Corner Store to Enhance Fresh Food Accessibility
2025-02-09

In response to challenges faced by the Forsyth Farmers Market (FFM) in Savannah, a new initiative has emerged to provide residents with easier access to fresh produce throughout the week. The nonprofit organization, which struggled with cash flow issues last year, has introduced the Forsyth Farmers’ Market Corner Store. This venture aims to address barriers such as transportation difficulties and work schedules that prevent some individuals from attending the weekend market. Located at 6228 Waters Ave., the store will operate from Tuesday to Friday, offering a selection of locally sourced products and artisanal items typically found at the Saturday market in Forsyth Park.

The launch of the Corner Store is part of FFM's broader mission to build a robust local food system. According to Asia Harold, Director of Community Engagement for FFM, the organization recognized the need to create more accessible options for residents facing various challenges. By opening the store inside their office building, FFM hopes to provide a convenient and less hectic shopping environment. The store will feature seasonal fruits, vegetables, handcrafted cheeses, breads, and other artisanal delights, along with prepared foods from popular market vendors.

Harold emphasized the importance of expanding access to fresh food, particularly for those who may not be able to attend the weekend market due to transportation or scheduling constraints. The Corner Store offers an alternative avenue for residents to purchase farm-grown produce and engage with the local food community. While the Farm Truck 912 program remains on hold, FFM is working diligently to finalize its relaunch schedule. Additionally, there are plans to extend the Corner Store’s operating hours beyond the current 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. timeframe, potentially including weekends and evenings.

The introduction of the Corner Store represents a significant step forward in FFM's efforts to enhance food accessibility in Savannah. By providing a wider range of shopping opportunities, FFM aims to strengthen its support for local farmers and small businesses while ensuring that residents have consistent access to fresh, high-quality products. The store embodies the organization's commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive local food system, benefiting both vendors and the broader community.
