Honolulu Launches Grant Program to Support Businesses Affected by Rail Construction
2025-01-15

Starting on January 27, 2025, the City and County of Honolulu will open an online portal for applications to a new grant program aimed at assisting local businesses impacted by the construction of the Honolulu Rail Transit. This initiative, established through Bill 40, seeks to provide financial relief to eligible enterprises facing challenges due to ongoing transit development.

The grants, valued at up to $10,000 per applicant, will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The application period will remain open until February 7, 2025. To qualify, businesses must meet specific criteria, including having fewer than 15 employees, generating less than $750,000 in annual revenue, and being located near active construction sites. Additionally, they must have been operational before January 1, 2022, and demonstrate a decline in revenue. These measures aim to ensure that the funds reach those most in need during this transitional period.

Supporting small businesses is crucial for maintaining the vibrancy and character of local communities. Mayor Rick Blangiardi emphasized the importance of preserving these establishments, especially as they stand to benefit significantly from the completed Skyline project, which promises to be a major economic catalyst. Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam highlighted the long-awaited support for businesses that have endured hardships throughout the rail's development. Meanwhile, Councilmember Radiant Cordero underscored the role of small businesses in the community and economy, advocating for their resilience and continued growth as the city moves toward a more interconnected future.
