Minnesota farmer Andrew Haataja has transformed his shop with an inventive solution for managing waste oil. By repurposing a kitchen sink, Haataja has created an efficient system that not only simplifies the disposal process but also enhances the functionality of his workspace. Located near Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Haataja’s farming operation is a family affair. Working alongside his father and uncle, he manages a diverse range of tasks, from crop cultivation to equipment maintenance. When Haataja decided to upgrade his waste oil management system, he faced the challenge of transferring used oil from bulk containers back into storage. Initially, this required standing on a stool to pour the oil, which was both inconvenient and inefficient. During a home renovation, an opportunity arose when a kitchen sink became available. Haataja saw potential in repurposing it for his shop.

With the help of his father, Haataja designed and installed a custom-built frame to mount the sink securely to the shop wall. Beneath the sink, they added shelves to store oil pans and buckets, ensuring everything had its place. To complete the system, they fitted a 90-degree PVC pipe to the drain, connecting it to a 2-inch hose that runs through the wall. Outside, a 270-gallon clear tote collects the waste oil, connected via a threaded pipe with a vent attached to the lid. This setup allows Haataja to effortlessly dispose of full buckets of oil and even store used filters for draining.

Each year, Haataja transports the collected oil to a local shop where it is exchanged for an empty container. Although some farmers use recycled oil for heating, Haataja opts for this trade system. Beyond farming, Haataja enjoys tackling home improvement projects whenever time permits. His passion for innovation extends beyond agriculture, as he continually seeks ways to improve both his farm and living space.
