Orchestral and Jazz Fusion: A Night of Video Game Melodies
2025-04-02

A unique musical collaboration is set to transform the Coronado Theatre into a vibrant celebration of video game music. On Saturday, April 5, 2025, the Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) will join forces with Chicago’s Blueshift Big Band for an exclusive performance titled "RSO at the Arcade." This event aims to bring the nostalgic soundtracks of iconic video games to life through an orchestral and big band fusion.

The concert features a diverse selection of video game themes from beloved titles such as “Super Mario Bros.,” “Tetris,” and “Halo.” Before the main event, attendees can participate in a “Super Smash Bros.” tournament hosted by Rockford University’s esports team. Benjamin Firer, RSO's assistant conductor, highlights the experience as a fresh take on familiar melodies. He notes that the music, though instantly recognizable, has been elevated to a symphonic level, creating an immersive auditory journey. Joel Baer, drummer and co-founder of Blueshift Big Band, worked alongside Firer to curate a program drawing from various gaming consoles. Together, they emphasize how the jazz ensemble and orchestra harmonize beautifully, bringing these epic scores to new heights.

This concert represents more than just entertainment; it serves as a gateway for newcomers to appreciate orchestral performances. Firer encourages audience members to express their excitement freely during the show, breaking away from traditional concert etiquette. The organizers hope this event will inspire attendees to explore classical compositions, drawing parallels between video game music and works by renowned composers like Tchaikovsky. By showcasing pieces crafted by classically trained composers, the event bridges the gap between contemporary and classical music, encouraging audiences to broaden their musical horizons.

Through innovative arrangements and dynamic performances, "RSO at the Arcade" promises to redefine the perception of orchestral music. It invites people to rediscover the magic of video game soundtracks while experiencing the thrill of live music in a grand setting. Such collaborations not only celebrate the artistry behind video game music but also highlight the universal language of melody, rhythm, and harmony that transcends generations.
