Recall Issued for Jewelry Kits Due to Hazardous Chemical Content
2025-03-31

A significant safety recall has been announced by LaRose Industries, affecting 224,100 Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry-making kits. The reason behind this extensive recall is the presence of a hazardous level of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) in the resin used within these kits. This chemical can cause irritation or sensitization if inhaled, touched, or ingested, particularly in its liquid form. As per federal regulations under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, children's products must not exceed permissible levels of such substances, which these kits have violated. Consumers are urged to cease using the kits immediately and seek refunds from the manufacturer.

Ten different models of the Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem kits, along with one refill pack, are involved in this recall. These kits feature a resin bottle and a UV setting light, packaged in boxes marked with the "Cra-Z-Art" brand name alongside either "Gemex" or "crazy gel2gem." Customers who purchased these items between January 2023 and September 2024 from retailers like Target, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Joann, Amazon, Walmart, and other online platforms should check their products against the impacted UPC codes listed on the official website. Prices for these kits ranged from $13 to $36.

The potential risk arises when the resin remains uncured, meaning it retains liquid properties or residue. In such cases, wearing the jewelry poses health risks. However, once fully cured, the product becomes safe for use. To date, no injuries have been reported related to these kits. Nevertheless, LaRose Industries advises storing any potentially affected jewelry away from children and refraining from wearing it until further notice.

Authorities recommend that all owners of the recalled items discontinue usage and reach out to LaRose Industries for a complete refund. By taking swift action, consumers can protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to harmful chemicals present in these popular crafting kits.

As part of maintaining consumer safety standards, this proactive measure underscores the importance of adhering to regulatory guidelines concerning hazardous materials in everyday products. Companies and manufacturers worldwide continue to emphasize vigilance in ensuring product safety while fostering trust among their customer base through transparency and accountability during recalls such as this one.
