In a groundbreaking study, researchers have uncovered that while many cloth and medical masks may not offer sufficient protection against microscopic airborne particles, simple modifications such as overmasking or using braces can significantly boost their effectiveness. However, only N95 and CaN99 respirators consistently provide the highest level of safety. This investigation into mask filtration efficiency highlights the importance of understanding how different masks perform in real-world conditions.
During a meticulous research period spanning from March 2021 to April 2022, scientists focused on assessing the aerosol filtration capacity of various masks and respirators. The study involved participants aged 16 and above who were free from respiratory ailments and latex allergies. Conducted under the guidelines of the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this experiment compared multiple types of masks, including specially designed cloth masks like the Essex model, level 1 and 3 medical masks, uncertified KN95s/KF94s, and certified respirators such as 3M N95 Aura 1870+ and Vitacore CaN99.
Utilizing advanced technology, the TSI 8026 Particle Generator measured aerosols within the range of 0.02–1 μm. Participants evaluated each mask based on perceived leaks, glasses fogging, and comfort levels using Likert scales. Notably, overmasking techniques and the application of braces were tested to assess their impact on filtration efficiency.
The findings revealed that two-layer cotton pleated Essex masks achieved a filtration efficiency of approximately 47-55%, comparable to level 1 masks at 52-56%. Level 3 masks showed variable performance between 60-75%, while KN95s/KF94s filtered between 57-77%. Certified respirators stood out with an exceptional 97-98% filtration efficiency. Implementing braces notably improved the median fitted filtration efficiency of level 1 and 3 masks to 79-94%. Overmasking did not affect leak scores but influenced discomfort ratings, with medical masks and respirators being more comfortable than KF94 and KN95 alternatives.
This comprehensive study underscores the critical need for public awareness regarding mask efficiency. While cloth masks and basic medical masks can be enhanced through practical adjustments, respirators like N95 and CaN99 remain unmatched in providing consistent protection.
