Road Construction Challenges and Traffic Disruptions in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties
2025-01-19

Drivers in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will face multiple traffic disruptions this week as various construction and maintenance activities take place on several key roads. The closures and lane reductions are scheduled to accommodate essential infrastructure improvements, including resurfacing projects, bridge replacements, and the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. Motorists should expect delays and plan alternative routes accordingly.

The construction activities span a wide range of roadways, from major highways like Interstate 10 to local streets such as U.S. 98 and North Palafox Street. In addition to the planned work zones, weather conditions may cause schedule changes, so drivers are advised to stay informed about real-time traffic updates.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade and Downtown Road Closures

In preparation for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations, specific sections of roads in both counties will be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of parade participants and spectators. These closures will affect travel plans for many residents and visitors, necessitating careful route planning.

In Escambia County, U.S. 98 will be closed from A Street to Tarragona Street on Monday, January 20th, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Similarly, in Santa Rosa County, S.R. 87 will be closed from Elva Street to Raymond Hobbs Street during the same day from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Drivers are urged to seek alternate routes and anticipate significant delays around these areas.

Ongoing Infrastructure Improvements and Lane Restrictions

Several ongoing infrastructure projects in both counties require intermittent lane closures and detours to facilitate necessary repairs and upgrades. These projects aim to enhance road safety and longevity but will inevitably lead to temporary inconveniences for motorists.

Notably, Gregory Street in Escambia County is undergoing resurfacing from North Palafox Street to 17th Avenue, with alternating lane closures occurring nightly between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additionally, North Palafox Street (U.S. 29) will experience daytime lane closures for paving operations. Interstate Circle Bridge over Eight Mile Creek remains closed until mid-2025, with detour routes clearly marked for drivers.

Interstate 10 at Nine Mile Road Interchange and U.S. 29 Interchange are also under construction, leading to lane reductions and closures. Drivers on U.S. 90 in Santa Rosa County can expect nighttime lane closures for milling and paving operations, as well as shoulder work on the Simpson River Bridge. Furthermore, U.S. 98 Widening project and routine bridge maintenance on Garcon Point Bridge will impose additional traffic restrictions.

All construction activities are subject to weather conditions and may be postponed or rescheduled if inclement weather arises. Motorists are encouraged to monitor local news and transportation updates for the latest information.
