I-20 Construction's Final Phase: Impact on Commute
2024-12-13
The reconstruction of Interstate 20 through Bossier City is now in its final phase, with hopes of completion by Christmas if the weather cooperates. This significant infrastructure project has been underway since September 2023 and is expected to last throughout 2025. Workers have been working tirelessly to ensure the smooth progress of the work.

Key Updates on the Reconstruction

Eastbound Lane Closures and Concrete Barrier Movement

Nighttime lane closures on eastbound I-20 will continue next week as workers move the concrete barriers dividing transit and construction. This is a crucial step in the final phase, as it allows for the installation of fresh concrete on that stretch. Since the 1960s, eastbound traffic will now be driving on brand new concrete. The process of pulling the pins that hold the concrete barriers in place and physically moving them requires nighttime closures to ensure the safety of workers and motorists. DOTD spokeswoman Erin Buchanan explained that this is a time-consuming process, but it is necessary for the successful completion of the project.During this transition period, eastbound motorists will be able to exit I-20 at either the Benton Road or Barksdale Boulevard interchanges. The I-20 eastbound on-ramp from Airline Drive will remain open, providing some relief to commuters.

Westbound Lanes and Future Work

The remainder of the westbound lanes will receive the same treatment as the eastbound lanes, but the timing has not yet been determined. DOTD is working hard to get the entire project completed by Christmas, but weather and other factors may impact the schedule. Once the barriers on both sides of the highway are moved, workers will begin reconstructing the outside lanes from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive in both directions, as well as the ramps.Workers have already started demolishing existing pavement on the outside lanes of I-20, and this work will take several months. In early January, work to construct the roadway base for the new outside lanes will begin.

Challenges Faced During Construction

One of the biggest problems work crews have faced is the issue of big rigs crashing or getting stuck in the construction zone. Last December, DOTD banned eighteen-wheelers from the construction area due to safety and schedule difficulties. Despite signage and law enforcement efforts to direct them onto detours, the problem continues. As of a couple of weeks ago, law enforcement has issued about 5,600 citations for trucks violating the ban. However, police have now shifted their focus to ensuring that oversized permitted loads follow their permits and do not get stuck in the construction zone. An oversized load cannot make it through the construction area without causing immediate closures, so this is a critical aspect of ensuring the safety and progress of the project. In conclusion, the reconstruction of Interstate 20 in Bossier City is progressing well, with the final phase underway. Despite the challenges, workers and law enforcement are working together to ensure the successful completion of the project by Christmas.
