His passing signifies the end of an era for a true industry stalwart.

Born into the vibrant heart of Hollywood, Thomas H. Brodek's journey in the entertainment industry began early. He was a proud alumnus of Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, where he shared classrooms with notable figures like Natalie Wood. His passion for cinema led him to the University of Southern California (USC) film school, from which he graduated in 1960. It was during his time at USC that he met his future wife, author and former Warner Bros. executive, Lorraine Brodek, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage until his peaceful passing on June 15 from cancer in Surprise, Arizona.

Brodek's professional trajectory was as varied as it was impactful. In the 1980s, he gained recognition as a producer for several feature films. His credits include 'The Aviator,' starring Christopher Reeve, 'The Principal,' featuring Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett Jr., and the quirky horror-comedy 'Transylvania 6-5000,' with Jeff Goldblum. These films showcased his ability to navigate diverse genres and work with prominent talent, establishing his reputation as a versatile and capable producer.

His influence extended significantly into television when he joined ABC Productions. From 1990 to 2002, Brodek served as a senior vice president and executive producer, playing a pivotal role in the network's high-profile miniseries. Among his notable achievements during this period were the Stephen King adaptations 'Storm of the Century' (1999) and 'Rose Red' (2002), as well as the series 'Kingdom Hospital' (2004), also developed by the acclaimed author. Earlier in his career at ABC, he was the executive in charge of production for the 1981 adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, 'East of Eden.'

Beyond his work at ABC, Brodek continued to contribute to the film and television sectors. In 2009, he was enlisted to produce the final four episodes of Showtime's historical drama 'The Tudors,' which filmed in Ireland. He also produced the 2014 film 'Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks,' starring the esteemed Gena Rowlands. Collaborating with Richard Soames, Brodek co-founded Doric Productions in 1986. This venture aimed to produce studio-backed projects, with their first success being 'The Boss’ Wife' (1986), featuring Daniel Stern, for TriStar Pictures. Their company was also behind the production of 'The Principal' (1987) and Disney's beloved 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' (1989).

Brodek’s leadership roles were not limited to production. He headed Southwestern Studios in Carefree, Arizona, where 'The New Dick Van Dyke Show' was taped from 1971 to 1974. He also held positions as executive vice president of production, administration, and business affairs for a company led by producer Mace Neufeld, and served as president of the television division of The Petersen Co. His expertise was sought after in advisory capacities as well, as he served as vice chairman of the California Film Commission and an adviser to the North Britain Film Commission. As a testament to his distinguished career and contributions, he was also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Thomas H. Brodek's life was a testament to a deep commitment to storytelling and the craft of filmmaking. He is survived by his daughters, Kristin and Kerri, and his grandson, Logan Dunn, who is following in his grandfather's footsteps as a postproduction assistant on a Netflix limited series.
