Gary Orvis Howe, a cherished member of the Saxton community, has passed away at the age of 88. Born in Robertsdale, he was the son of Charles C. and Nora K. (Sipes) Howe. His life journey encompassed many milestones, from excelling in academics and sports to serving his country with distinction and forging enduring family bonds. After graduating high school in 1954, Gary joined the U.S. Air Force, where he developed a passion for journalism. He later pursued higher education, embarking on a long career as an operations research analyst. Beyond professional achievements, Gary's legacy is marked by deep connections with loved ones and unwavering support for local communities.
From early years in Robertsdale, Gary carved out a remarkable path. A standout athlete during his time at Robertsdale High School, he contributed significantly to the undefeated football dynasty that set Pennsylvania records. Following his military service, Gary earned a degree in secondary education and mathematics at Shippensburg State College. His subsequent career in Philadelphia spanned three decades, showcasing his analytical prowess. Alongside his professional endeavors, Gary nurtured personal relationships that defined him. Meeting Irene Taylor transformed his life; their marriage in 1964 led to raising two sons while fostering lifelong friendships.
In 2007, Gary and Irene returned to Saxton, reconnecting with roots that had always called to them. There, Gary embraced gardening, sharing produce generously with neighbors and writing articles celebrating young athletes. Active participation in the Broad Top Area Senior Center and other local organizations highlighted his commitment to community engagement. Whether cheering for sports teams or attending gatherings, Gary remained steadfastly involved in the lives around him.
Gary’s impact extended far beyond Saxton. Relatives recall his thoughtful gestures, such as sending countless birthday cards without fail. Survived by his wife Irene, sons Craig and Brian, grandchildren Taylor and Hayden, and numerous siblings, Gary leaves behind a vast network touched deeply by his kindness. Preceded in death by some close family members, his memory will live on through those who knew him best.
