2025-05-09

An inspiring celebration of creativity is set to take place this weekend as the Minnesota State High School League hosts its annual Visual Arts State Festival. Scheduled for noon on Saturday, May 10, at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, this event will feature nearly 125 talented students from across the state. Among them are 32 participants representing 19 school districts in Northern Minnesota. The festival highlights artistic achievements without competition, emphasizing the dedication and talent of these young creators.

Visual Artistry Takes Center Stage in Golden Valley

In a vibrant display of creativity, the Visual Arts State Festival will bring together students recognized for their exceptional talents during regional competitions. Held at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, this gathering provides a platform for nearly 125 students to exhibit their work. Notably, Mercedes Scheie from Warren-Alvarado-Oslo has three pieces showcased: two sculptures and a craft. Additionally, ten other students, including Megan Delaney from Roseau and Taliea Honga from Menahga, will present two works each.

This year’s festival spans twelve categories, with Northern Minnesota contributing significantly to ten of them. The event celebrates the diversity of artistic expression, ranging from mixed media collages to intricate ceramics and thought-provoking sculptures. For instance, Emma Sundberg from Grygla-Gatzke presents her sculpture "Roots of Reflection," while Natasha Chandler from Clearbrook-Gonvick showcases her ceramic creation, "Rose Garden." Each piece tells a unique story, reflecting the personal vision and skill of its creator.

Selected by judges who evaluate artwork based on merit during section festivals, these students earned recognition through superior or excellent ratings. Judges also choose one standout piece per category for additional honors, ensuring that only the finest works make it to the statewide showcase.

From Grygla’s Addison Severts with her 2D Mixed Media/Collage titled “Hope” to Mari Folland from Tri-County displaying her sculpture “Entangled to Endangered,” the festival promises an impressive array of artistic styles and techniques.

This non-competitive event aims to honor the hard work and imagination of high school artists, fostering a community where creativity thrives.

The Visual Arts State Festival serves as a testament to the boundless potential of young artists. Through their creations, these students inspire others to embrace their own artistic journeys.

As a journalist covering this event, I am struck by the profound impact such celebrations have on nurturing future generations of artists. By providing a stage for these young talents, we encourage not only individual growth but also a broader appreciation for the arts within our communities. This festival reminds us all of the transformative power of art, encouraging both creators and spectators alike to see the world through fresh perspectives.
