Greenville's Urban Revitalization: BUILD Project Updates and Future Plans
2025-01-14

The BUILD project in Greenville is making significant strides in transforming the city's downtown area. Various stages of construction are progressing steadily, with demolition and utility upgrades ongoing between Evans and Cotanche Streets. Improvements to stormwater management and streetscapes are currently taking place on Greene Street, while traffic signal poles are scheduled for installation on Washington Street by the end of February. Notably, the intersection at Washington Street has recently opened, along with new street lighting between roundabouts. Retaining walls at Elizabeth and Albemarle have been completed, and storm drain connections in West Greenville are now finished. Looking ahead, several key milestones are set for the coming months, including the reopening of Cotanche Street in late March, Greene Street in mid-April, and the opening of a new roundabout by the end of May.

In the heart of Greenville’s downtown, the BUILD project is reshaping the urban landscape through comprehensive infrastructure enhancements. The current phase focuses on critical updates to utilities and demolition activities between two central thoroughfares. These efforts aim to modernize the underground systems and prepare the area for future development. Simultaneously, work on improving stormwater management and enhancing the streetscape is underway on Greene Street. This segment of the project seeks to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment while ensuring efficient drainage solutions. Additionally, the installation of traffic signal poles on Washington Street will enhance traffic flow and safety for both motorists and pedestrians. These initiatives reflect the city's commitment to sustainable and resilient urban planning.

Significant progress has already been made, marking important achievements for the BUILD project. One of the most notable accomplishments is the reopening of the Washington Street intersection, which had been closed for extensive renovations. New street lighting installed between roundabouts not only improves visibility but also adds an aesthetic appeal to the area. Furthermore, the completion of retaining walls at Elizabeth and Albemarle intersections demonstrates the project's dedication to structural integrity. In West Greenville, the successful connection of storm drains ensures better flood control and environmental protection. Each completed milestone brings Greenville closer to its vision of a revitalized downtown core.

Looking forward, the BUILD project has outlined a clear timeline for upcoming developments. Cotanche Street is expected to reopen by the end of March, providing much-needed connectivity within the downtown area. By mid-April, Greene Street will also be accessible again after undergoing comprehensive improvements. However, as part of the ongoing construction, Evans Street will close in mid-April, redirecting traffic temporarily. Later in May, Pitt Street will follow suit with its closure. A highlight of the project will be the opening of a new roundabout by the end of May, designed to streamline traffic flow and enhance safety for all road users. These planned developments underscore the city's strategic approach to urban renewal and infrastructure modernization.
