When Bernard James lost his wife Corlette to cancer in 2009, he was left with the monumental task of raising their six-year-old twins while managing multiple businesses. This poignant story recounts how James moved from New York to California to start anew, transforming his life and business ventures in honor of his late wife. Despite the challenges, he persevered, growing his Caribbean restaurant chain and involving his children in the family business. Today, James continues to honor Corlette’s legacy through charitable efforts and a thriving enterprise.

Bernard James first met Corlette when he was just 19 years old. At the time, he was working for his uncle’s plumbing company in New York City. His uncle mentioned that the daughter of a business partner was incredibly beautiful, which prompted James to call the office where Corlette worked. Their relationship blossomed quickly, leading to marriage when James was 22. Life was busy but fulfilling as they welcomed twin babies into the world and embarked on various business ventures together. However, this period of joy was short-lived. In December 2008, Corlette received a devastating diagnosis of cancer. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away in 2009, leaving James to raise their young children alone.

The following years were particularly challenging for James. He had to juggle running his plumbing company and a budding restaurant while also handling the affairs of Corlette’s family business. To help manage these responsibilities, he enlisted the assistance of a nanny and his sister. Despite the overwhelming stress, James found solace in the idea of starting fresh. He remembered visiting California with Corlette and noting the lack of authentic Caribbean cuisine there. This realization inspired him to relocate and expand his restaurant business. Moving to California in 2013 marked the beginning of a new chapter for James and his family.

In California, James faced numerous obstacles, including navigating LA traffic to get his children to school and working long hours at his food truck. Yet, his perseverance paid off as he gradually transformed his mobile operation into successful brick-and-mortar restaurants in Long Beach and Hollywood. His children played an integral role in the business, with his son eventually joining him as a partner and owning 30% of the venture. Meanwhile, his daughter pursued a career in marketing to avoid the demanding schedule of restaurant management. Throughout these changes, James has remained committed to honoring Corlette’s memory by raising funds for cancer research and organizing Miss Caribbean pageants.

Fifteen years after Corlette’s passing, James reflects on her influence and wonders how far his business would have grown if she were still alive. Her strong presence continues to inspire him and his children. Beyond his professional achievements, James has expanded his family by welcoming a young son named Little Chef, born during the pandemic. Although he hasn’t remarried, he has embraced a new phase of life with love and purpose, all while keeping Corlette’s legacy alive through every endeavor.
