In December 2008, Corlette received a devastating diagnosis of cancer. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away in 2009, leaving James to raise their young children alone.

The following years were particularly challenging for James. He had to juggle running his plumbing company and a budding restaurant while also handling the affairs of Corlette’s family business. To help manage these responsibilities, he enlisted the assistance of a nanny and his sister. Despite the overwhelming stress, James found solace in the idea of starting fresh. Yet, his perseverance paid off as he gradually transformed his mobile operation into successful brick-and-mortar restaurants in Long Beach and Hollywood. His children played an integral role in the business, with his son eventually joining him as a partner and owning 30% of the venture. Meanwhile, his daughter pursued a career in marketing to avoid the demanding schedule of restaurant management.
